Description
The threat of poison gas being used by the German army prompted this public service message by the British government. Every citizen was issued a gas mask with instructions on how to protect themselves in the event of a gas attack. The atrocities reported in British newspapers spread fear among citizens, who felt that the Germans were capable of anything in seeking victory. Hitler's armies never employed chemical warfare during the second World War, in part because they feared American retaliation could devastate their ranks.
