Russian Posters

During much of the 20th Century, Communist propaganda was utilized by Russian officials to spread the influence of a socialist state during the creation of the Soviet Union, the former USSR. Governments in Russia were characterized by strong, opinionated leaders like Vladimir Lenin, Leonid Brezhnev, and Joseph Stalin, who became patriarchs for cultural change. The executive leadership they put in power used Russian posters to promote Communist policy and recruit workers and soldiers for its cause.

Russian revolutions throughout Asia were effective in overthrowing governments based on ineffectual autocratic leaders. The last and most significant of these was Nicholas II, who was abdicated as emporer in 1917 and executed along with ten members of his family and employs a year later. This bloody February Revolution, in effect, marked the beginning of Communist rule in Russia.

Communist posters had a significant impact on Russian society. They promoted socialist values and the working class as central to the success of Russia’s future potential as a world power. Even so, the images used in these posters drove some conservatives to madness and suicide when considering the depths of hardship they had endured for someone else’s vision of freedom.

Lenin, in particular, was a commanding figure who worked tirelessly for the Revolution. Many of the Russian posters seen here include the venerable politician as the architect of a new Bolshevik society based on the teachings of Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky. Lenin’s group vehemently opposed the bourgeoisie and native capitalists as reactionary cowards responsible for weakness and corruption in Russian society.

Russian posters created shortly before World War I were innovative artistic models for a more powerful Communist propaganda campaign that directly influenced the advance of the Soviet Union by the end of World War II. This poster art was the virtual voice of a People’s Republic that orchestrated a cultural and physical war against rich families in power before the war.

History buffs can appreciate Communist posters as great examples of the power of a message. Under the right conditions, such messages can motivate millions to take action for a cause they believe in. Communist propaganda was particularly effective in generating support for a form of government that would take many years and many lives to produce the level of success and prosperity it had originally intended for its people.
